People In Music History
Holst, [originally von Holst] Gustav [Theodore] (1874-1934) English composer
of partly Swedish descent, pupil of Stanford, at various times pianist,
trombonist, teacher (especially at Morley College, London), and conductor of
Boston Symphony Orchestra, 1922. Interested in oriental philosophy and made
various settings of the Hindu scriptures in his own translations. Bold harmonic
experimenter. e.g., in Polytonality; finally cultivated a markedly austere
style, e.g., in Egdon Heath for orchestra. Other works include operas At the
Boar's Head (after Shakespeare's Henry IV), The Perfect Fool, and Savitri; The
Planets for orchestra; St. Paul's Suite for strings; choral Hymn of Jesus and a
First Choral Symphony (words by Keats; there is no second); music for military
and brass band; songs (4 for voice and violin), etc.
